To What Extent Can Chinglish Be Tolerated?
For a long time, Chinglish has been disapproved in English classes in China. Chinglish used to, and still does imply a bad knowledge of Standard English. Chinglish is and was not accepted in classes in both China and Hong Kong. But, it's really hard to prevent Chinglish in public use. Very few Chinese users of English, or Chinese teachers of English can avoid Chinglish in their everyday lives. In addition, with the popular use of Chinglish among the Hong Kong society, it has been reluctantly accepted by many people. So, to what extent can Chinglish be tolerated?
At school, students no longer completely accept what the teachers teach them. They have more opportunities to explore the subject themselves. Therefore, they have more access to English. This may seem like a good thing, as they are finding out information independently. But, with Hong Kong's education, Hong Kong students may actually be learning English incorrectly. In addition to the fact that English teachers use Chinese in classrooms to teach English, they might be getting the incorrect information from outside sources. These are two very vital issues that cause Chinglish in Hong Kong. They are also able to develop their own attitude towards English. Students can choose the way they use English, whether it's using it properly or merging languages like Chinglish. Sadly, Chinglish is more welcome than Standard English. When people speak Chinglish, they can fully understand each other.
However, this can severely influence the future of English in Hong Kong because if this keeps up, Standard English might eventually disappear from Hong Kong and our society might never be able to communicate with the outside world properly.
A survey conducted by the Cambridge University suggests that Hong Kong people are not deliberately speaking Chinglish, they are actually taught to speak English like that by other sources like the Internet and their elders. So therefore, this is not entirely the speakers fault that they are speaking Chinglish.
In conclusion, Chinglish should not be stamped out as it is convenient and humorous. However, our society should be educated on when should Chinglish be allowed. Chinglish can be tolerated in a humorous, entertaining purpose like texting and small talk with your friends. But it definitely cannot be tolerated in school, at work or at any serious and formal situations.
